There have been some media reports that the local government of northeast Chinese city Shenyang, Liaoning province, announced it is preparing to transform its main industrial area in Dadong district to accommodate EV companies such as Tesla.

Today Tesla has officially refuted this news, saying there is no plan for the factory in Shenyang. The announcement on the official Liaoning government account disappeared.

Tesla didn’t deny the agenda for the second Gigafactory itself.

  • Last October 8, Musk said at the annual shareholders’ meeting that Tesla was also considering building a new factory in China, and that the site selection might start in 2022 and a decision would be made in 2023.
  • This is not the first time Tesla’s second Gigafactory sparked attention. On November 3, there were rumors of Tesla’s plans to build a second Gigafactory in Qingdao, China. Tao Lin, Tesla’s vice president of external affairs, said that the information on the Internet about the site of the second factory is not true.
  • We interpreted that Tao Lin did not deny the second factory, but only the site selection information. Since then, there have been rumors in the market that several local governments want Tesla to locate.

China is the world’s largest market for new energy vehicles and has a global advantage in the supply chain. As we previously reported, Tesla is expanding its Shanghai plant. After the latest expansion project is completed, Giga Shanghai’s annual production capacity is expected to top 1 million units in the next few years, the person familiar with the matter said.
